Stop Recidivism
Rehabilitation Enables Dreams (RED) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit restorative justice organization based in Atlanta, GA. Founded in March 2015 by David Lee Windecher, RED is committed to breaking the cycle of recidivism and creating pathways to lasting change.
RED operates at the intersection of law, education, and community development, providing comprehensive programming that addresses the root causes of criminal behavior and empowers participants to build productive, law-abiding lives.
“Dedicated to keeping people out of the criminal justice system — permanently — through programs that enhance the social, financial and civic literacy of nonviolent youths referred to court.”
RED was born from the personal experience of its founder, David Lee Windecher. Before becoming a criminal defense attorney, David accumulated 13 arrests and spent 7 months incarcerated. Through this firsthand experience within the criminal justice system, David recognized the deep racial disparities and systemic failures that perpetuate cycles of crime and punishment.
Rather than simply practicing law, David chose to address the root causes of recidivism by founding RED. His vision was clear: create an organization that would intervene before nonviolent youth become entrenched in the justice system, providing them with the tools, education, and support they need to chart a different course.
David’s unique perspective — having been on both sides of the courtroom — gives RED an authenticity and empathy that resonates deeply with the young people it serves. His story is proof that rehabilitation is possible, and that dreams can be realized regardless of one’s past.
A comprehensive restorative justice curriculum designed to transform participants over the course of a full year, covering social awareness, personal development, and community engagement.
Programs that build social awareness, communication skills, conflict resolution, and healthy relationship development to help participants navigate their communities constructively.
Education on budgeting, saving, financial planning, and economic empowerment to provide participants with the tools for financial independence and stability.
Understanding rights, responsibilities, and civic engagement to empower participants to become active, informed members of their communities.
A restorative approach focused on accountability, healing, and repairing harm rather than punishment, creating pathways to reconciliation and personal growth.
RED collaborates directly with prosecuting officials who refer nonviolent youth to the program as an alternative to traditional prosecution, providing a second chance.
